Exit West by Mohsin Hamid

As in The Reluctant Fundamentalist and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, Mohsin Hamid gives a human face and voice (albeit droll) to great tragedy in his new book.  In this case his characters are caught up in one of the world’s biggest challenges/failures – the plight of refugees.
In an imagined future in an unnamed country, a young couple flee the random violence that has overrun their everyday lives via secret “black doors” – finding themselves often in as much danger as that they fled.
This is an important novel for these troubling times.  A novel both wise and irreverent, thought-provoking and unsettlingly prescient.  Please put this on your reading list.
