See What I Have Done – Sarah Schmidt
What an outstanding debut! A fictionalised retelling of the 1892 axe murders of Andrew & Abby Borden, for which the daughter/step-daughter Lizzie was accused and ultimately found not guilty.
Told from several points of view, the characters are complex and Lizzie herself enigmatic. Weaving several stories together, the ending remains open and rife with implications. The writing is sensual, the characters enthralling, and the plot captivating. The story asks as many questions as it answers. I could not put this book down.
