The Vanishing Deep

Author(s): Astrid Scholte

Teenagers

Two sisters. One dangerous secret. Twenty-four hours to uncover the truth. Seventeen-year-old Tempest was born into a world of water. The most skilled diver on the Equinox Reef, she searches drowned cities with her older sister Elysea, seeking out old world treasures to trade for Notes. After Elysea mysteriously drowns, Tempest scavenges the ruins alone, driven to collect enough Notes to buy her sister's life for 24 hours, and to finally learn the secret she had kept until her last breath. However, once revived, Elysea convinces Tempest to break her out of the Palindromena research facility and they embark on a dangerous journey to discover the truth about their parents' death. But they're pursued by two Palindromena employees desperate to find them before Elysea's time is up and prevent them from uncovering the secret behind the revival process and the true cost of restored lives. Dead or living, everyone must pay the price.

CONSTANT READER STAFF REVIEW: CAELLI

Astrid Scholte is a master at world-building and her novels just sing with atmosphere and realism. Her second book, The Vanishing Deep, is set on a planet almost completely swallowed up by the oceans, where humans have learned to live on the water and science can revive drowning victims just long enough to say goodbye.

I love how quickly you become immersed in the character’s world, sharing Tempe’s anger at her dead sister, her grief for her lost parents and her fierce determination to survive on her own.  The relationships are beautifully complex too, from the hero-worship, frustration and love between Tempe and her sister Elysea, to the admiration Lor has for the two sisters and the magnetic pull that Tempe herself holds for him.

Scholte is an absolute gem of Australian YA and fantasy and my new favourite author.

I can’t wait to read what she writes next.
