Biography

James (Jim) Albert Frazier OAM ACS DSC.hcJim Frazier is the 'boy from the bush', a quiet country boy with a love of beasts and bugs who grew up to be a highly respected cinematographer, photographer, environmentalist, maker of wildlife documentaries and innovative inventor. Growing up in Armidale in country New South Wales, he attended school for the minimum number of years then trained as a cabinetmaker following in his dad's footsteps, leading to a position at the University of New England where, fortuitously, he met Densey Clyne, thus becoming a cinematographer. As Mantis Wildlife Films, they travelled the world, filming wildlife documentaries, including for Sir David Attenborough and others. An amazing coincidence, a damaged camera lens, led to Jim's eventual discovery and invention of the Panavision/ Frazier Lens System that has revolutionised the international film industry. An ingenious lens providing greatly extended depth of field and the ability to have both the foreground and background in focus, it is used by leading filmmakers including Steven Spielberg (every one of his films since Jurassic Park), James Cameron and in television commercials. Jim won a Technical Oscar for this, as well as numerous other awards for his wildlife cinematography. He also creates crystal artworks, that have been developed through the growth and manipulation of crystals on glass plates. They are owned by many, including Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton. In Jim's book Butterflies on my Mind, he has captured live butterflies and moths "in flight" in his studio, with all effects produced in-camera. To bring the devastation of the Earth to our attention, Jim wanted to produce a global blockbuster feature film Symphony of the Earth. This project has been passed on to others to hopefully develop in the future.
